One of the three largest European peninsulas, the Balkans is washed by the Adriatic Sea in the west, the Ionian Sea in the southwest, and the Black Sea in the east. The word Balkan is Turkish and means “mountain”, and the peninsula is certainly dominated by mountains, especially in the west. The Balkan Mountains lie east-west from Serbia across Bulgaria, the Rhodope Mountains stretch along the Greek-Bulgarian border and the Dinaric Alps extend down the Adriatic coast to Albania. This is where nature lovers enjoy our hikes. [/block]
